Below are a few links and information found regarding the recyclability and sustainability of chocolate packaging. There are important factors that always need to be considered, such as the strength of the packaging and the contact of the material upon the chocolate. It is clear that some plastic has to be used within sustainable packaging to ensure it is durable and would not rip or tear - but the plastic that is included can always be recyclable. This is how I would produce the packaging for the Huel cocoa bar range.
- 'Chocolate bars are typically wrapped in one of two ways: aluminum foil and a decorative paper sleeve that fits over the whole bar, or PET films'
- '...brands and consumers are looking for more sustainable and eco-friendly packaging choices. PET wrappers have proven to be hard to recycle, and chocolate manufacturers are keen to move away from the two different wrapping elements of aluminum and paper chocolate packaging, which can be more costly and time-consuming to produce.'
- '...eco-friendly packaging, made from 100% bio-degradable, recyclable, recycled cardboard as well as FSC ® certified. Printed with Eco Friendly inks.'
- '...paper and card so it’s 100% recyclable. It goes straight in your recycling unit, off to be collected each week by the council. No plastic, no foil.'
- '...use recyclable inks so they’re all metallic inks as opposed to using foil block which is traditionally used.'
- '...the bar is absolutely 100% recyclable, the carton and the wrapper for the bar.'
- '...primary packaging i.e the one that you actually physically hold, has to be slightly stronger so it’s 81% paper and 19% plastic. This is what is known as ‘widely recycled’.
- '...the reason it had to have a little bit of plastic in here is literally just because of strength. If it was just paper, it would rip and tear and it wouldn’t be food-safe.'
- '...still using some plastics in packaging. We’d love to get rid of them but frankly, one of the biggest challenges we’ve got, is the fact that food needs to be packaged safely – it needs to be food-safe...some plastic we have to use but what we have done is made sure that the plastic is totally recyclable.'
