Developing the Most Appropriate Visual Approach

Updated: May 12, 2021

Having completed the 20 postcard activity using various markers, pens, paints and digital sketches, i wanted to develop these methods further. Directly below i have applied a more 'block' colour approach - a limited amount of different tones and line drawings, some experimenting with a background. I like the overall appearance of these, but feel they will have to be developed past simple line drawings. I dont want the illustrations ill be producing to be overly complex, but i do aim to have a level of detail.

Experimenting with a technique applied throughout a previous project, i wanted to analyse producing drawings with slightly more detail and light effect. When i started the illustrations below, i thought this would be the technique i develop further and eventually choose, however where this was a successful style where drawing flowers, i was surprised by how much i did not like the experiments shown here. I think some o the curves on the fruit are too small and intricate for this style to be effective.

Developing the style shown to the top of this blog, i decided to add more shape and backgrounds to the fruits. I actually really like this style, and its not one i typically work towards. Theres enough detail to recognise what it is im drawing, but also not too much detail to have the images overly compact and distracting.

Moving away from working digitally, i wanted to cut out some fruits using only one colour of card, per fruit. As mentioned, im looking to really limit the amount of colour used, so i thought this would be an effective method! I do actually really like these outcomes, i tried to create as much detail as possible within a smaller space. My issue is that are these too abstract for the packaging of a food product? I feel i want the images to be as clear as possible, as someone not understanding or recognising the ingredients of the product would be a huge issue.

These experimentations were great in showing me how to limit my colour palette to the maximum, with only 4 colours being used across all of these images!
